Australian Junior Tennis Players Set to Visit

By Staff

We have an exchange group coming to visit us from Australia. Yes, this is the same group that came to Sacramento in 2005 and we provided housing for the group of 30 adults and teenagers aged 13-17 years of age.
This time, the group has grown to a whopping total of 43 people traveling to the U.S. This year, we will see them from June 30th thru July 7th. Gold River Racquet Club's manager, Michael Burchett and Tennis Director, Marty Rothfels, have graciously extended a warm welcome to the group to play a USTA sanctioned junior tournament while they are visiting. We have planned a fun-filled group of activities around the tournament including barbecues, Sacramento Capital matches, Sunset Paddles on Lake Natomas and most probably, a day playing tennis against other junior players at Lake Tahoe.

Phil Shanahan is the Tour Manager for the group and is also the nephew to Margaret Court, who holds the title of most Grand Slams wins ever. Phil stayed with Mike and Noel Smith during his last visit and he will do the same this year. We love this group and we have seen many friendships develop. Mike and Noel actually went down to the Australian Open last year and met up with Phil again. Pat and Shari Ryan also made the trip down to Australia and met up with Phil.

Phil has generously offered to do a reciprocal trip and host our teenagers going down to Australia for three weeks starting the day after Christmas. The group would start out in Sydney for New Year's Eve celebration and from there, go to a series of junior tournaments for three weeks culminating in a grand visit to the Australian Open and then fly home.

Help us welcome the Australians and come watch the excitement at Gold River Racquet Club June 30th to July 7th!
